Oct 2, 2018 at 19:42 comment added Dhamma Dhatu Sure. As I said, seeing the harm is difficult because women are are lusty and seeking sex. But underneath, each time they fail to secure a partner, they become weaker and more lonely. Eventually they end up as one of 25% of Western women today over 40 years who are on anti-depressants. The very fact that most women want a lasting relationship but cannot achieve it shows how they have been harmed. The fact there are countless dating & relationship websites shows how all of these people have been harmed. They simply don't know how to maintain a relationship. They are too confused & damaged.
Oct 2, 2018 at 19:10 comment added Val You gave the argument if a person had AIDS, but that is usually not the case and I'd kid myself to believe that every women I encouter had AIDS. The Buddha actually took strong measurements to keep monks from females. So it's probably not practical as a lay-buddhist since the environment is not optimal for celibacy, is it?
Oct 2, 2018 at 19:09 comment added Val DD, since you mentioned "lustful fornication & copulation" I'd like to know how you or advanced practitioners view and handle sex and sexual urges? As I am aware, Dukkha encompasses all kinds of mental pains, but why is sexual lust dukkha? It seems to be a silly question but I cannot get it. Clearly, the majority of people seem not to view it as suffering, else they wouldn't enjoy it. Don't come up with a drinking example, because Sex and drinking are a bit different. The harms in drinking are much stronger. If one has protected and consenting sex, I see no harm there? Enlighten me. Regards

Oct 2, 2018 at 6:00 comment added Dhamma Dhatu The 1st sermon (SN 56.11) says the noble eighfold path is not for househoulders that still engage in lustful fornication & copulation. And what is right resolve? Being resolved on renunciation.. And what, monks, is right effort? (i) There is the case where a monk generates desire, endeavors, activates persistence, upholds & exerts his intent for the sake of the non-arising of evil, unskillful qualities that have not yet arisen. (ii) He generates desire, endeavors, activates persistence, upholds & exerts his intent for the sake of the abandonment of evil, unskillful qualities that have arisen.
Oct 1, 2018 at 19:22 comment added ChrisW Can you give a reference for the "2nd and 6th factor", please? I didn't understand that.
Oct 1, 2018 at 12:31 comment added Dhamma Dhatu The harm is enough. If you knew a person had AIDS, for example, would you have desire for them? That said, seeing "harm" can be difficult in ordinary circumstances. Regards
Oct 1, 2018 at 12:03 comment added Val How do you go about abstaining from sensual pleasures? The thing is, merely knowing the harms is not enough, since pleasures are emotional and it easily over-writes reason. This is why I believed that piti is then the "so to speak" new drug for feeling pleasure.
