May 29, 2018 at 11:28 | comment | added | Dhamma Dhatu | If the mind is clear, with right samadhi, anatta is experienced in each tetrad however the disappearance of 'self' may not occur until the 3rd tetrad. For example, in the 1st tetrad, if it is clearly seen that the body breathes rather than the self breathes then this is seeing anatta of the body & breathing. In the 2nd tetrad, when feelings arise so they are "alien" to the observer then feelings are seen as anatta because the observer is completely detached from the feelings. In the 3rd tetrad, the same will occur at the 9th stage. At around the 12 stage "self" might mostly disappear.

May 28, 2018 at 10:40 | comment | added | Dhamma Dhatu | sorry i don't know anything about pratītyasamutpāda, which is Sankrit & Mahayana. as for paticcasamuppada, no, it is not a "general principle". it is a "specific principle". paticcasamuppada is exactly the same as the 2nd noble truth, as explained in AN 3.61. as for a "general principle" of causality, this is called "Idappaccayatā". also, paticcasamuppada has nothing to do with emptiness (sunnata).

So "Dependent Origination" aka pratītyasamutpāda is a general principle, whose specific applications or examples include: the four noble truths; the twelve nidanas; also the lokuttara-paticcasamuppada; and the (Mahayana) doctrine of emptiness. I think that people on this site usually use it as the name of the doctrine of the 12 nidanas (or vice versa, i.e. when they want to name the doctrine of the 12 nidanas, they call that "dependent origination" or paticcasamuppada).

The stream-enterer has comprehended Dependent Origination Do you mean the 12 nidanas? Or is it sufficient to comprehend the four noble truths? Are the four noble truths the main or primary, essential, original doctrine of "Dependent Origination", or does "Dependent Origination" only and necessarily mean the doctrine of the 12 nidanas?
