Obviously drinking alcohol leads towards heedlessness but merely abstaining from alcohol by itself doesn't necessarily help one avoid lower destinations or achieve arahantship. Concentration and insight are more helpful.

Dec 22, 2016 at 9:08 | comment | added | MischievousSage | Yes not drinking alcohol is one of the five precepts...in MN 45 The Buddha explains how an ascetic life (including some rules for Buddhists) wrongly practiced tormenting one's body leads to lower destinations (hell). Following some of the rules for Buddhists in a wrong manner would still lead towards hell (see Dhammapada, 311).

Dec 22, 2016 at 9:01 | comment | added | breath | He also pointed out that ascetic practices (which includes avoiding eating meat, drinking alcohol, etc...) are painful in the present and yield pain in the future not drinking alcohol is included in the 5 precepts Of course you can eat meat and be an arahant - and of course a vegeterian can still be an evil doer but i do belive not eating meat and not drinking alcohol are things which help reach arahantship it is important you dont do them to boast your moral and not do them for the purpose of casueing you suffering but if its done for the right reasons this things and otehr
