A dead Indo-European language indigenous to the Indian subcontinent. It is important to Buddhists and scholars of Buddhism because many of the earliest Buddhist texts are written in the Pali language e.g. the Pali Canon. It is also used during chanting and ritual in some Buddhist traditions.
